Museum Kleines Klingental

Salvaged from the underground – Archaeological finds from the centre of Basel

Today: Closed

18 May 2024 - 16 March 2025

How did a 400 kg building stone of a Roman monumental structure get under the Freie Strasse? What do a hand washing vessel, leather remains and a casting mould reveal about life and crafts in medieval Basel? These and other spectacular finds from two millennia come from current and earlier excavations and tell the story of the city centre. They shed light on the origins and changes of the market square, its adjoining streets and alleys, and bear witness to a devastating neighbourhood fire. They are being shown for the first time in this exhibition, which was created in cooperation with the Archaeological Soil Research Basel-Stadt.
